The 2015 season for the 98+ Scottish National League campaign got underway last Saturday at the Royal Commonwealth Pool against Forth Valley. Portobello were without Ben Scott who was at GB Junior trials and Carys Hardy who was representing Scotland Senior Ladies at the 8 Nations tournament in Dublin. This did however mean a debut at this level for Maksim Livingstone who despite being only 13 had 3 chances to score a debut goal but unfortunately for Maksim none found the net, on this occasion anyway! Portobello, captained by Clayton Woods and scorer of 9 goals started the game strong and led 4–1 with 3 goals from Jamie Davidson and 1 from the captain, Clayton.

The start of the 2nd period saw Forth Valley mount a small comeback for the first half of the period but Portobello increased the pressure again and some great point blank saves from James Gardner in goals denied the away team any fight back. Esme McGregor was unlucky not to be on the score sheet with a great 8m shot hitting the woodwork but 3 goals this period by Clayton and 1 for Felix Charlton ended the first half with Portobello in control of this match leading 8-3.

The 3rd period saw Forth Valley fade away and Portobello extend the game beyond all doubt, Jodie White did a lot of great work to receive the ball on several occasions from James Gardner in goals to keep the Portobello momentum and attacks going in this period and the goals kept coming for Clayton with 3 more and Jamie added another 1 to his tally as the period ended with Portobello well in control at 12-3.

The 4th period saw all players share plenty of water time and all players doing good work to maintain the concentration levels to add another 4 goals to the score. Jodie had a great chance to open her 2015 account but her attempt was saved by the goalkeeper but Gregor Turner opened his 2015 season with the first goal of the quarter. Clayton added 2 more goals to finish his opening game of 2015 with 9 goals but it could have been a lot more with a few chances missed however a great captain’s performance and Jamie also added 1 more to his tally to finish with 5 goals and a final score of 16-4 for Portobello.

There will be harder tests to come in this league but a great start and overall a good solid performance by all players especially Clayton Woods who never stopped all game and Jamie Davidson who seemed to stroll through this game in second gear and stopped anything Forth Valley had in attack. With exams coming to an end and the development training starting we hope this team will be able to increase their fitness levels, ball skills and match day tactics and be able to compete and challenge the other teams in this league which they are more than capable of doing.
