Positive signs despite loss against Manchester

Posted by Portobello ASC on Saturday, October 26, 2013, In : BWPL
Match report from today's encounter against Manchester by coach Alan Anderson:

Our first game of the super 5s turned out to be a close encounter, with only 8 players due to the date of the event being changed and players already committed and illness meant we only had 8 players, hardly ideal to play the team who finished top after the first round of matches.

A good controlled start, strong defense and positive attack saw us lead 4-1 before ending up 6-4 lead at half time. A few lapses on concen...

Worst news for GB men's water polo

Posted by Portobello ASC on Monday, November 26, 2012, In : BWPL

The news the British water polo community has dreaded for months is now out – funding is set to be withdrawn from the men’s programme.

In other words, just three months after capacity crowds cheered inspiring performances by our lads against the best in the world at the London Olympics, GB men’s international water polo appears to be dead in the water.

Posted by Portobello ASC on Saturday, November 17, 2012, In : BWPL
In an intriguing weekend of water polo at Crystal palace, all sides in this years super 5s league ended up with one win and one loss meaning only goal difference separates all teams in the league.

Portobello played Bristol on Saturday 10th Nov and it was a slightly frustrating for the Porty boys who stuttered for the first 3 periods. They did lift the tempo in the last period but by this point Britsol had gained a substantial lead which was too great to overcome. The game ended 11 goals to 9 i...

Good start to BWPL 2012

Posted by Porty WP on Sunday, September 2, 2012, In : BWPL
Portobello travelled to Bristol this weekend to compete in the first BWPL weekend of the 2012 season. First up Portobello were up against Penguin and the Edinburgh boys held their own with a good win bagging 15 goals to Penguin's 12.

Porty then faced Cheltenham and were unfortunately defeated by 7 goals to 12, although the scoreline does not really reflect the way Portobello played. In reality the game was much more closely fought.

Last up were Invicta, and Porty's solid defence allowed them to...

Posted by Porty WP on Sunday, December 11, 2011, In : BWPL
Porty have now played in their first 3 BWPL weekends in the 'Super 5s', having travelled to Lancaster, Crystal Palace and Loughborough in Nov/Dec.

Despite having bagged some 53 goals over 6 games and having produced some of their best performances for years against the toughest teams in Britain, Porty have unfortunately been unable to grab a win and are currently positioned at the bottom of the Super 5s.

The team can be proud that they are producing well crafted goals to remain in contention ...

What a start to BWPL 2011!

Posted by Porty WP on Saturday, September 3, 2011, In : BWPL
Porty have made the best possible start to their BWPL campaign beating both Rotherham and Bristol today.

Rotherham were put to the sword with ruthless efficiency even after going down 0 - 3 within the first 3 minutes and the retirement of 'the wall' (Simon Fuste) midway through the 2nd quarter with bad cramp. Bojan replaced Simon between the sticks and played a fantastic game. Porty were also on striking form up-front and sailed to an impressive 15 - 9 victory, with Tom Crammond putting the fi...

BWPL Update

Posted by Alan Anderson (Coach) on Monday, December 20, 2010, In : BWPL
Delighted to say Portobello senior team retained Division One status for next season by drawing with Invicta 7-7 and beating Welsh Wanderers 12-7 in the last weekend of the British water polo league at Bath.  This is a great achievement for the club and we are now officially the 7th best team in Great Britain in 2010.  This also means we have qualified for the British Championship in Feb 2011.  Re-structuring of the leagues for 2011 meant that anything lower than 7th and we would have been in...
